…The first edition was published in three volumes between 1768 and 1771. Edinburgh engraver Andrew Bell (1726-1809) and printer Colin MacFarquhar (c. 1745-c. 1793) commissioned printer and scholar William Smellie (1740-1795) to compile it, and began publishing it with the plan of publishing 100 double-column quarto volumes every week, which were then compiled into three volumes after completion. They considered the approach of conventional encyclopedias to be the folly of breaking down science into individual terms and explaining them in alphabetical order, and attempted to systematically describe the principles of science. …
