Back heavy snow - Uradaisetsu

...Splendid alpine plant communities grow in various places above 1,600 meters, and small animals such as Siberian chipmunks and pikas, as well as various alpine butterflies such as the Pale-legged Butterfly (Ten). These biota are a valuable academic treasure, as they are a mixture of three types: North American/Aleutian, continental, and Honshu. The area including the source of the Tokachi River, known as Ura-Daisetsu, is a natural conservation area (Tokuten). It is the center of Daisetsuzan National Park, and Sounkyo Hot Springs is located at the northern foot of the mountain. The number of tourists has increased dramatically since the opening of the ropeway connecting the mountain to the middle of Mt. Kurodake in 1967.
