〘noun〙[一] (:ハフ)① A way of doing something. A way of doing things. ※Utsubo (c. 970-999) Toshikage: “The dancers and the attendants were following the customary way, so it was very unpleasant.”② A way of standing and behaving. A formality for moving around in one's house. Etiquette and manners. ※Kyureki-Kyureki-sho, Tenryaku 3 (949), February 11: “ No one outside the courtyard was in the dining room until the morning meal, and no one outside the counsellor's seat was in the room beforehand .”③ Something formal. Something that conforms to a set formula. A custom. A rule. A practice. A rule. ※Tonbo (c. 974): “That month was so long that the year came to an end. Since such a customary way was so ordinary, it was not recorded.”④ The way things are. The state of things. ※Konjaku (around 1120) vol. 13 "There is nothing inappropriate in judging good and bad fortune by observing the manners of the world . " ⑤ A method of composing writings, poems, etc. Sappou. → Sakuho (manners). [2] (: Hof) A Buddhist term. A ritual ceremony for the conduct of confession, precepts, Buddhist ceremonies, etc., according to a prescribed method. ※Kanchi-in Hon Sanbo-e (984), Vol. 2 "The manners of the Vimalakirti ceremony at Yamashina Temple were transferred to the ceremony."
