…Despite Yoshimune's efforts, however, Western-style horseshoes did not take root in Japan. After Perry's arrival at the end of the Edo period, envoys from Britain, France, and Russia arrived one after another, and Michio Kuwajima, a horse surgeon attached to the Shogunate's cavalry, learned horseshoeing techniques from an American in Yokohama, and Azami Asakichi, a firefighter in Takanawa, Edo, learned them from a British person, and worked to spread the techniques. Later, in 1872 (Meiji 5), the new government invited non-commissioned officer Bust from France to the Army Academy to teach French-style farrier techniques, and this was the first time that Japan had systematically learned Western-style farrier techniques. …
