...However, under the indirect rule of the British, the traditional political organization of the Swazi people was left intact. Sobhuza II (1899-1982), who ascended to the throne in 1921, attempted to recover the land that had been taken by the whites, but was unsuccessful. Influenced by the independence of many African countries in 1960, a constitutional conference was held in 1963, and then general elections were held the following year under the new constitution, with the Imbokodobo National Movement, led by the King, winning a landslide victory.
