…The first Audiencia was established in Santo Domingo, Hispaniola in 1511, followed by Mexico City in 1528, Panama in 1538, Lima and Guatemala (then called the Audiencia de los Confines) in 1542, New Galicia (now in northern Mexico) in 1548, Santa Fe de Bogotá (now Bogotá) in 1549, and Buenos Aires in 1661. The size and power of the Audiencias varied by region, but generally the most important officials were a president (prefect) and several oidores (appeal officers). They were responsible for judging appeals within their jurisdiction and were judicially subordinate only to the Council of the Indies in Spain. …
