Francesco Guardi

Francesco Guardi

Italian painter. A member of the Guardi family, a Venetian family of painters. He learned painting from his eldest brother Giovanni Antonio, who succeeded his father Domenico, and initially worked on religious paintings under his brother. However, he also showed an early interest in the imaginary landscape paintings called "Capriccio" popularized by Marco Ricci, and in Canaletto's accurate depictions of the city of Venice using a camera obscura. In later years, especially after his brother's death in 1769, he produced this type of work exclusively. His landscape paintings of Venice are different from those of Canaletto, and are full of unique lyricism and fantasy. The world depicted in his light and suggestive brushwork is similar to the paintings of the 19th century Impressionists. Unlike Canaletto, he did not attract the attention of foreigners, and he was not elected a member of the Academy until he was 73 years old. He lived a modest life and his artistic attitude was so professional that he was not elected a member of the Academy until he was 73 years old. However, his works have a unique modernity and stand out among Venetian Rococo art.
