Heihachiro Fukuda

Japanese:
Heihachiro Fukuda

Japanese painter. Born in Oita Prefecture. His pen names were Sosen and Kyushu. He often stamped his works with the name "Maan", a reference to his father's name Mataro and his mother's name Yasu. After graduating from the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, he graduated from the Kyoto Municipal School of Painting in 1918 (Taisho 7). The following year, his work "Snow" was selected for the first Teiten exhibition, and he continued to exhibit his work in official exhibitions. In 1946, his work "Carp" and the following year, his work "Crane" were selected as special prizes, establishing his position in the art world. While he often served as a judge thereafter, in 1955 (Showa 5), he also founded the Rokucho-kai with Nakamura Gakuryo and Yamaguchi Hoshun. After the Second World War, he was active in the Nitten exhibitions, and in 1947 (Showa 22), he became a member of the Japan Art Academy, and in 1986, he was awarded the Order of Culture. His works initially showed a meticulous style based on thorough sketching, but gradually became more decorative, and his clear and bold color compositions have earned him a unique position among modern Japanese paintings. His representative works include "Peony" (Yamatane Museum of Art, Tokyo), "Ripples", "Fresh Snow" and "Rain" (all at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo).
