Rust (sabi, rust) - Rust (English spelling)

Japanese: さび(錆∥銹) - さび（英語表記）rust

A corrosion product that forms on the surface of a metal when it corrodes in the natural environment (air, soil, seawater, fresh water, etc.). Rust is an agglomeration of tiny crystals of hydrated oxides and basic hydroxides of metals. It can take on a variety of colors depending on the combination of metal and environment. Rust scraped off and ground into powder is equivalent to a type of inorganic pigment. It is said that the colors that are least harsh on the human eye are chocolate brown and green, but it is an interesting combination that the rust of the most representative metals, iron and copper, are reddish brown (red rust) and green (verdigris), respectively.

自然環境(大気，土壌，海水，淡水など)の中で金属が腐食したときに，金属の表面に生ずる腐食生成物。さびは金属の水和酸化物，塩基性水酸化物などの微小な結晶が凝集したものである。金属と環境との組合せに応じて多様な色彩を示す。さびを削りとって粉末にしたものは無機質の顔料の一種に相当する。人間の目に最も負担にならない色はチョコレート色と緑色であるといわれるが，金属を代表する鉄と銅のさびがそれぞれ赤褐色(赤さび)，緑色(緑青（ろくしよう）)であるのはおもしろいとり合せである。
