The central area of a Roman city, settlement, or colony. Since the 1st century BC, it has been identified with a municipality (municipium) and served as the center of self-government for the neighboring territories. In the provinces, it was called the oppidum of the Roman people and gradually adopted the customs of the Italian cities.
