The Assam Himalayas east of Bhutan includes the Indian territory formerly known as NEFA (North-East Frontier Division) and now known as Arunachal Pradesh. Until recently, this was a land of tribal peoples whose culture was not influenced by Indian civilization, except for the ethnic groups in the northern part of the region who were influenced by Tibetan civilization and became Tibetan Buddhists.
