Lean - David Lean

One of Britain's leading film directors after the Second World War. Born in Croydon, south of London. He entered the film industry at the age of 20, and after working as a film editor, became a director in 1942. He gained fame with The Happy Race (1942) and The Merry Ghost (1945), both based on plays by Noel Coward, as well as A Brief Encounter (1945), which depicts a brief romance between a married doctor and his wife. He went on to produce a number of outstanding works that are characteristic of British cinema, including adaptations of Dickens's Great Expectations (1946) and Oliver Twist (1948). After romantically depicting the love of an American maid in Venice in "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (1955), he moved on to international blockbusters such as "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (1957), "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962), and "Doctor Zhivago" (1965), developing large-scale human dramas intertwined with spectacle and establishing himself as a global master. He won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director in 1957 and 1962. His subsequent works include "Ryan's Daughter" (1970) and "Passing by River" (1984).

第二次世界大戦後のイギリスを代表する映画監督。ロンドン南郊クロイドンに生まれる。20歳で映画界入りし、フィルム編集の仕事を経て1942年監督となる。ノエル・カワードの戯曲による『幸福なる種族』（1942）と『陽気な幽霊』（1945）、そして妻子ある医師と人妻の短い恋を描く『逢(あい)びき』（1945）で名声を博し、その後もディケンズの映画化『大いなる遺産』（1946）や『オリヴァ・ツイスト』（1948）など、イギリス映画らしいじみな秀作を数々発表。『旅情』（1955）でベネチアを舞台にアメリカのオールドミスの恋をロマンチックに描いたあと、『戦場にかける橋』（1957）、『アラビアのロレンス』（1962）、『ドクトル・ジバゴ』（1965）と国際的な大作に転じ、スペクタクルを絡めたスケールの大きな人間ドラマを展開して、世界的巨匠の地位についた。1957年度、1962年度のアカデミー賞の作品賞と監督賞を受賞。その後の作品に『ライアンの娘』（1970）、『インドへの道』（1984）がある。
