Abbeville culture

An Early Paleolithic culture whose reference site is a site on the high terrace of the Somme River in Abbeville, northern France. Originally called the Shell culture, it is considered the oldest stone tool culture associated with the hand axe in Europe. A culture associated with large extinct mammals, it is dated to the older part of the Quaternary Period, probably to the Mindel Glacial Period. However, there are very few sites that can be definitely assigned to this culture, and its cultural characteristics are not well understood. The indicative stone tool is the hand axe. Both sides have been adjusted with large chipping, and the blade (ridge) is zigzag, indicating that it was hammered with a stone.

北フランス、アブビルのソンム川高位段丘にある遺跡を標準遺跡とする前期旧石器時代文化。もとはシェル文化とよばれたもので、ヨーロッパのハンド・アックスを伴う石器文化の最古に位置づけられる。大形絶滅哺乳(ほにゅう)動物を伴う文化で、第四紀の古い部分に年代づけられるが、その年代はおそらくミンデル氷期と考えられる。ただ確実にこの文化にあてられる遺跡はきわめて少なく、文化的特色はよくわかっていない。指標となる石器はハンドアックスである。両面を大きな剥離(はくり)で調整され、その刃部（稜部(りょうぶ)）はジグザグ状を呈し、石でたたかれたことを示している。
