Hori clan

Japanese: 堀氏 - ほりうじ

A feudal lord in the early modern period. Among the Hori clan, which belonged to various surnames such as the Seiwa Genji, Fujiwara, Sugawara, and Ogami clans, the Hori clan, which was of the Toshihito lineage of the Fujiwara surname and originated in Minami-Kumo-gun, prospered the most. Hidemasa Hisataro, the son of Hideshige Hori, who ruled Akanabe in Minami-Kumo-gun, served under Nobunaga Oda and ruled Nagahama in Omi, then became subordinate to the Toyotomi clan, and after becoming the lord of Sawayama Castle in Omi, in 1585 (Tensho 13) he ruled Kitanosho in Echizen with over 180,000 koku of rice. In 1598 (Keicho 3), his son Hideharu was transferred to Kasugayama in Echigo with over 300,000 koku of rice, and in 1610, during the reign of his son Tadatoshi, the family was abolished and became extinct.

近世大名。清和源氏，藤原氏，菅原氏，大神氏などの諸姓に属する堀氏のうち，藤原姓利仁流で美濃厚見郡出自の堀氏が最も栄えた。美濃厚見郡茜部（あかなべ）を領した堀秀重の子久太郎秀政は織田信長に属して近江長浜を領し，ついで豊臣氏に従属，近江佐和山城主を経て1585年(天正13)越前北ノ庄18万石余を領し，その子秀治が98年(慶長3)越後春日山30万石余に転封し，その子忠俊の代の1610年改易されて絶家した。
