Battle of Toba-Fushimi

Japanese: 鳥羽・伏見の戦 - とばふしみのたたかい
Battle of Toba-Fushimi
The first civil war of the Boshin War. After the restoration of imperial rule, the anti-shogunate faction, including Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, suppressed the public deliberation faction and ordered the shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, to resign and hand over his land. Yoshinobu did not accept this and retreated to Osaka to regain control, while the public deliberation faction, which compromised with Yoshinobu, was regaining influence within the new government. Feeling a growing sense of crisis, Saigo and others engineered a provocation in the Kanto region, and the shogunate, following this, burned down the residence of the Satsuma clan in Edo and decided to raise an army and march into Kyoto. On January 26, 1868 (January 2, 4th year of the Keio era), 15,000 soldiers, including the shogunate soldiers and soldiers from the Aizu and Kuwana clans, marched north along the Toba-Fushimi Kaido road.
