This is a rice field map created by Kofukuji Sanjo in 735 (Tenpyo 7) for the rice fields of Nijū-chō, Yamada County, Sanuki Province, which were recorded in the Kofukuji Water and Land Field Catalog of 709 (Wado 2). Although it is the oldest rice field map, it is not the original, but a copy thought to have been created around the 11th or 12th century. Kofukuji (Kawahara-dera) became a branch temple of Toji Temple from the 9th century onwards, and in the 12th century, the temple land and its surroundings became the property of the head priest of Toji Temple, so the Kofukuji documents came to be passed down as part of the Toji documents. The rice field map was kept at Toji Temple until the end of the Edo period, and its existence was widely known and copies were made, but it was eventually lost and passed on to Kashiwagi Kaichiro, who acquired it in 1882, when Matsuoka Shirabe acquired it, and it is currently kept in his Tawa Bunko (Shido-cho, Okawa-gun, Kagawa Prefecture).
