A position in charge of relaying and reporting petitions. Indenso can be seen as early as the Shirakawa Insei period (1086-1129), but it was first established for the emperor during the Kenmu government (1333-36). Depending on the subject of the petition, there were different types of samurai denso and temple and shrine denso, and they were temporarily appointed for enthronement, changes of era, and calamities. During the Edo period, the samurai denso was the second most important position after the regent, and their main duties were to manage negotiations between the Imperial Court and the shogunate, as well as to handle important matters such as public appearances and oral presentations at the Imperial Court, and to relay petitions from temples and shrines. There were a maximum of two denso, and they were selected from among the nagon and councilors. There were various types of temple and shrine denso, such as the Nara denso, the Jingu denso, and the Kamo denso.
