...A tea party is a time when guests are invited to tea and light meals such as sandwiches, cakes, and cookies are served. In the late 19th century, garden parties were also popular among the upper classes in the summer, and they not only included food and drink, but also ``refined'' sports such as croquet and archery, in which women could participate. Although originally from New Zealand, large tents were set up in the garden and bands were invited, as depicted in K. Mansfield's Garden Party (1922).
