In ancient Japanese, the word "imo" referred to taro and Chinese yam. It was often limited to taro, and taro was also called "ie-tsui-mo" in contrast to Chinese yam. In the Edo period, sweet potatoes were added to the category of potatoes, and at the end of the Edo period, potatoes were added.

As seen in the Wamyōshō, in ancient times, the word 'imo' was written as 'ietuimo' (house potato) and referred to taro. In the Shōsō-in documents, in addition to 'imo' and 'ietuimo', the name 'zuiki' appears as 'imo-chō', and it is known that they were bought and sold.
