Year of death: June 12, 1761 (July 13, 1761) Year of birth: 1712.1.28 (1712.1.21) The 9th Shogun of the Edo Shogunate. The eldest son of the 8th Shogun, Yoshimune. His birth mother was Osuma (Shintokuin), daughter of the Okubo clan. His childhood name was Chofuku. Born in Wakayama, Kii Province, he moved to Edo Castle when his father succeeded the Shogun family from the Kishu clan, and became the heir and was educated by Muro Kyusu and others. He succeeded the Shogun in September 1745 (Enkyo 2), and was proclaimed Shogun in November. After 16 years in power, he handed over the reign to the heir, Ieharu, and died the following year. He was buried at Zojoji Temple. His posthumous name was Junshin'in. He was in poor health and left politics entirely to the senior councilors Matsudaira Takemoto and others. He spent most of his time in the Ooku, and it is said that few people knew what he said and did.
