New Year's sake - Otoso

…Medicinal liquor drunk as a gift on New Year's Day. Short for tososhu. Tososan is made by soaking herbs such as cinnamon, Japanese pepper, white atractylodes (young root of the oleander), bellflower, and wind-proofing herb in sake or mirin. It is a custom that began in China during the Tang Dynasty, during which rhubarb, tiger's stick, and monkshood (root of the aconite) were added to the above and called "Yashinsan." This was placed in a red cloth bag and hung in a well at dusk on New Year's Eve, and was then pulled out on New Year's Day and soaked in sake in the bag. …

…元日に祝儀として飲む薬酒。屠蘇酒の略。肉桂（につけい），山椒（さんしよう），白朮（びやくじゆつ）(オケラの若根)，桔梗（ききよう），防風（ぼうふう）などの生薬（しようやく）を配合した屠蘇散（とそさん）を清酒，または，みりんに浸して作る。中国唐代にはじまる習俗を伝えたもので，唐代には上記のほかに大黄（だいおう），虎杖（いたどり），烏頭（うず）(トリカブトの根)を加えて〈八神散〉と呼び，これを紅色の布袋に入れて，大晦日の暮れがた井戸の中につるし，元旦に引き上げて袋のまま酒に浸した。…
