New Year's sake - Otoso

…Medicinal liquor drunk as a gift on New Year's Day. Short for tososhu. Tososan is made by soaking herbs such as cinnamon, Japanese pepper, white atractylodes (young root of the oleander), bellflower, and wind-proofing herb in sake or mirin. It is a custom that began in China during the Tang Dynasty, during which rhubarb, tiger's stick, and monkshood (root of the aconite) were added to the above and called "Yashinsan." This was placed in a red cloth bag and hung in a well at dusk on New Year's Eve, and was then pulled out on New Year's Day and soaked in sake in the bag. …
