Sadoshima Chogoro

A leading Kabuki actor in the mid-Edo period. He was the son of Sadoshima Denhachi, a Kamigata Dogai actor and master of Shosagoto. At the age of five, he performed a Goban Ningyo performance in Edo, which was well-received. A master of Shosagoto, he is known for his Nitto Ko, Komen, and Shichika. Later, he shaved his head and took the name Renchibo. His book, Sadoshima Nikki, contains his own experiences and knowledge of Kabuki, his views on the art, and secret teachings of Shosagoto. This book was written around 1755 (Horeki 5), and was published in 1774 (Anei 3) by Hachimonjiya in Kyoto as Volume 4 of the Yakusha Zensho, and the following year it was included in Yakusha Rongo and republished by the same publisher. 江戸中期の立役の歌舞伎役者。上方の道外形役者で所作事の名手佐渡嶋伝八の子。5歳のときに江戸で演じた碁盤人形の所作は大好評であった。所作事の名人で,「二挺鼓」「後面」「七化」などが有名である。後年剃髪して蓮智坊と称した。その著書『佐渡嶋日記』は歌舞伎に関する自己の経験,見聞,芸論や所作の秘伝を収めている。本書は宝暦5(1755)年ごろ成立,安永3(1774)年,『役者全書』巻4として京の八文字屋より出版され,翌年には『役者論語』に収録されて同じ版元より再び刊行された。歌舞伎の興行,演技,演目などを具体的に知ることのできる貴重な資料である。<参考文献>『日本庶民文化史料集成』6巻
