A 628m-high bell-shaped volcano located on the northwestern edge of Oita City, facing Beppu Bay. The entire mountain is covered in forests of red pine and tabu trees, and at the summit are the ruins of a castle that was once the base of the Otomo clan. It has a great view and is part of the Setonaikai National Park. The group of Japanese macaques living in the mountain is the largest in Japan, and is a nationally designated natural monument as the "Monkey Habitat of Takasakiyama." Since the fall of 1952, the monkeys have been attracted to the grounds of Manjuji Betsuin Temple on the eastern foot of the mountain by scattering bait, and almost every day, three groups of 1,600 wild monkeys can be seen living their lives. The area is protected as Takasakiyama Natural Zoo. On the coast is the Oita Marine Palace Aquarium "Umitamago." It is a 10-minute bus ride from Beppu and a 20-minute bus ride from Oita.
