...Even after the Date clan moved their base to Sendai, it continued to be a base for shipping along the Abukuma River and developed as the center of the Date region. From the late Edo period onwards, sericulture flourished, and sericulture techniques developed significantly with the invention of the Aburiko (warm-rearing of silkworms) by Taguchi Tomebei and the Kantōke (temperature gauge) by Nakamura Zen'emon during the Tenpo period (1830-44). Until the beginning of the Showa period, the town was known as the silkworm capital. After World War II, the demand for raw silk declined and the sericulture industry also went into decline, but today the hosiery industry has developed and the town, along with the neighboring town of Hobara, is a major producer of knitwear. ...

…さらに伊達氏が仙台に本拠を移した後も阿武隈川水運の一拠点をなし，伊達地方の中心地として発展した。江戸後期以後，養蚕業が盛んになり，天保年間(1830‐44)に田口留兵衛による〈あぶりこ〉(蚕の温暖飼育)，中村善右衛門による蚕当計(寒暖計)の発明などで養蚕技術も著しく発達し，昭和の初めまで蚕都と呼ばれるほどであった。第2次大戦後，生糸の需要が低下し，養蚕業も下降線をたどったが，現在はメリヤス工業が発達して隣接する保原町とともにニット製品の主産地となっている。…
