Born: Around 1540. Périgord, Bourdeilles [Died] July 5, 1614. Paris. French memoirist, soldier, and courtier. He came of age at the court of the King of Navarre and studied law in Paris and Poitiers. He spent most of his life traveling around France and Europe and participating in wars. He fought on the Catholic side in the Wars of Religion, but in 1584 he fell off his horse and was seriously injured, causing him to retire from public life. His works include Vies des illustres (Biographies of Famous Ladies), Vies des hommes illustres et des grands capitaines (Biographies of Noble Gentlemen and Warriors), and Vies des dames galantes (Biographies of Beautiful Women), which were published posthumously as Mémoires (Memoirs) (1665-66).
