Satsuma Kiriko

Japanese:
Satsuma Kiriko

A type of glassware from the Edo period. Kiriko means cut. It began in the autumn of 1846 (Koka 3), when Shimazu Narioki, the feudal lord of Satsuma (Kagoshima Prefecture), needed glassware and glass bottles for pharmaceuticals, and invited glass craftsman Shimoto Kamejiro from Edo to open a factory. During the reign of Shimazu Nariakira, the Shuseikan was built to promote production in the domain, and various industries were modernized based on Western technology. As part of this, European glass manufacturing methods were introduced, and Satsuma Kiriko was born. The glass is lead glass, and in the case of copper red glass, the specific gravity is around 3.5. In many cases, a transparent layer of glass is covered with reddish-red, blue, or purple glass, and the pattern is created by cutting from the surface. The products, such as plates, bowls, bowls, goblet, and bottles, met the demand of the feudal lord and the upper class, but were also used as gifts for domains around the country, and orders from various domains also increased. The museum was short-lived due to damage to the Shuseikan during the Anglo-Satsuma War (1863) and Nariakira's early death, but it is highly regarded for its artistic quality.
