Hakamagi - Hakamagi

Japanese: 袴着 - はかまぎ
Hakamagi - Hakamagi
Also called chakko. This is a ceremony in which a child is dressed in hakama for the first time. In the past, it was performed between the ages of 3 and 7, regardless of gender, and after the Edo period, it was fixed for boys aged 5. During the Heian period, it was mainly performed among nobles, but later it became popular among samurai and then commoners. The child is made to stand on a go board facing the auspicious direction, dressed in a hemp kamishimo (a traditional Japanese formal kimono), put on hakama starting from the left foot, and is allowed to wear two swords for the first time. The child is asked to be the father or a person in a high position, or a healthy couple with prosperous descendants, and the child is invited to the family shrine, visits the homes of relatives and acquaintances, or holds a small party at home to celebrate. Since the early modern period, it has been performed on November 15 of the lunar calendar, and became the custom of Shichigosan (November 15).
