Chin (English spelling)

Japanese: チン[州]（英語表記）Chin

One of Myanmar's seven states. Located in the northwest of the country, between 20°30' and 24°10' north latitude and 92°50' and 94°10' east longitude, it borders India and Bangladesh in the west. It has an area of 36,000 km2 and a population of 440,000 (1994). Its maximum width from east to west is only 140 km, but its length from north to south is 480 km. It became a special district at the same time as independence in 1948, and was elevated to a state under the new constitution in 1973. The state capital is Mindah. Administratively, it is divided into nine townships. The average annual rainfall is 1,500 mm in Falam and 1,800 mm in Mindah.
