Wei Shuanghou

Wei Shuanghou

...General term for the musical compositions of the Ming and Qing dynasties performed in early modern Japan. Ming music was introduced to Nagasaki in the mid-17th century by Wei Shuanghou (1613?-1690), a native of Fujian Province, and eventually traveled to Kyoto to be performed at the Imperial Palace. Wei Shuanghou's great-grandson, Wei Hao (pen name Ziming, ?-1774), also lived in Kyoto for about 10 years around 1770 (Meiwa 7), where he trained more than 100 disciples and gained the adoration of aristocrats and lords.
