Power - Power

The amount of work done or energy supplied per unit of time. It is also called power, work rate, or labor rate. In the most general sense, the work of a moving force is called power. Horsepower and kilowatts are the quantitative expressions of power. Horsepower was used as a unit of power for a long time because Watt began to express the power of steam engines in comparison with the power of a horse. Watt defined 1 horsepower as 33,000 foot-pounds per minute. This was later changed to the metric system, where 1 horsepower is defined as the amount of work done of 75 kilogram-meters per second. This is abbreviated as PS. After World War II, 1 watt was defined as 10 ⁷ ergs per second, and this became the international unit of power. 1 kilowatt is 10 ¹⁰ ergs per second.

単位時間になされる仕事の量、または供給されるエネルギーの量。パワー、仕事率、工率ともいう。ごく一般的にいえば、動いている力の働きを動力という。これを数量的に表示したものが馬力であり、キロワットである。ワットが蒸気機関の動力を馬の動力と比較して表すことを始めたので、動力の単位として馬力が長い間使用された。ワットの定めた1馬力は、毎分3万3000フィート・ポンドであった。これがメートル法に改められ、1馬力は毎秒75キログラム・メートルの仕事量とした。これは略語PSで表す。第二次世界大戦後は、毎秒10⁷エルグを1ワットとし、これを国際的な動力の単位とした。1キロワットは毎秒10¹⁰エルグである。
