Archaeopteris (English spelling)

Japanese: アルカエオプテリス（英語表記）Archaeopteris

A fossil of a protogymnosperm unique to the Late Devonian period, approximately 360 million years ago. It has been reported to have been found in New York and Pennsylvania in the United States, eastern Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Germany, and other places. Its leaves are fern-like, bipinnate, and the pinnae show radial veins. Its spores are either homospores of the same size or heterospores with varying sizes, and it was thought to be a fern. However, a trunk of Callixylon with a diameter of over 1m has been found in eastern New York, and it was thought to be a conifer because its wood structure is similar to that of conifers.

約3億6000万年前のデボン紀後期に特有の原裸子植物の化石。アメリカのニューヨーク州，ペンシルベニア州，カナダ東部，イギリス，アイルランド，ベルギー，ドイツなどから産出が報告されている。葉はシダ状の2回羽状複葉，小羽片は放射状の脈を示し，胞子が同じ大きさの同型胞子，または胞子に大小の差のある異型胞子をもちシダ類と考えられていた。他方，カリキシロンCallixylonという直径1m以上もある樹幹がニューヨーク州東部から知られ，材構造が針葉樹に似ているので針葉樹類と思われていた。
