Apelles (English spelling)
An ancient Greek Hellenistic painter active in the second half of the 4th century BCE. He is believed to have been born in Colophon in Asia Minor and died in Kos. He studied in Ephesus and Sicyon, and later became the court painter of Alexander the Great. He painted many famous works, including portraits of the Macedonian royal family and "Aphrodite Rising from the Sea." He is also said to have written a book on painting. None of his works survive.

前4世紀後半に活躍した古代ギリシア・ヘレニズムの画家。小アジアのコロフォンに生れ,コスで没したと推定される。エフェソスやシキュオンで学び,のちアレクサンドロス大王の宮廷画家となる。マケドニア王家の肖像や『海より上がるアフロディテ』など,多くの著名な作品を描いた。また絵画に関する書物も著わしたと伝えられている。作品は現存しない。
