[Died] March 15, 493, Ravenna. The first Germanic (barbarian) king to rule Italy after breaking away from the rule of the Roman Empire. He was of a noble Germanic family. He became a member of the Western Roman Emperor's Praetorian Guard in Ravenna (470), and in 476, after the Roman general Orestes had placed his son Romulus Augustulus on the throne, he led a rebellion, supported by mercenaries, and became its leader. He killed Orestes and dethroned the last Western Roman Emperor, Romulus Augustulus. In 476, he was given the title of patrician by the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Emperor Zeno. Under Zeno's orders, he conquered Dalmatia (now Croatia) from 480 to 482 and Luz (now Austria) from 487 to 488, but he disagreed with Zeno regarding the governance of Italy and was defeated (493) and assassinated by Theodoric the Great of the Ostrogoths, who was ordered by Zeno to do so.

ローマ帝国の支配から脱して，最初にイタリアを実質的に支配したゲルマン民族 (蛮族) の王。ゲルマンの名門の出身。ラベンナで西ローマ皇帝の親衛隊員となり (470) ，ローマ将軍オレステスが息子ロムルス・アウグスツルスを帝位につけたのちの 476年，反乱を起し，傭兵の支持を受けてその隊長となり，オレステスを殺し，最後の西ローマ皇帝ロムルス・アウグスツルスを廃した。 476年東ローマ (ビザンチン) 皇帝ゼノからパトリキウスの称を受けた。ゼノのために，480～482年にダルマチア (現クロアチア) ，487～488年にはルジ (現オーストリア地方) などを制圧したが，イタリア統治に関してゼノと意見が対立し，ゼノの命を受けた東ゴートのテオドリック大王に敗れ (493) ，暗殺された。
