Lagoon Nebula

A diffuse nebula in Sagittarius. It is located at the end of the handle of the Southern Dipper, and is called the Lagoon Nebula because the dark nebula crosses north and south in front of it, making it look like a tidal flat. Its catalog number is M8 or NGC6523. It is close to M20, famous for the Trifid Nebula. Overlapping the nebula is the open cluster NGC6530, which is thought to be shining due to the ultraviolet light from the stars in it. The Lagoon Nebula contains small, round clumps of dark nebula called globules. Globules are dense parts of molecular clouds that are thought to be on the verge of contracting under their own gravity to become protostars. It is about 3,900 light years away. Its apparent magnitude is 6.0, and its apparent diameter is about 25 arcmin. It can be seen in the southeastern sky around 7pm in early August, and in the southern sky around 9pm.

いて座にある散光星雲。南斗六星の柄(え)の先にあり、暗黒星雲が手前を南北に横切ることにより干潟のように見えることから、干潟星雲とよばれる。カタログ番号はM8またはNGC6523。近くに三裂星雲で有名なM20がある。星雲に重なり散開星団のNGC6530があり、その中の星からの紫外線により輝いていると思われる。干潟星雲にはグロビュールとよばれる小さく丸い暗黒星雲の塊がある。グロビュールは分子雲の高密度部分で、自分の重力で収縮して原始星になる直前と考えられている。距離は約3900光年。実視等級は6.0等、視直径は25分程度。8月初旬の午後7時ごろに南東の空に、午後9時ごろに南の空に見える。
