His original name was Shilian and his pen name was Xia Zhong, but he changed his name in 1689 (the 28th year of the Kangxi era) after being implicated in a crime of lèse majesté. He passed the Jinshi examination in 1703 and retired in 1713 after serving as a lecturer at the Hanlin Academy. He spent most of his time in his hometown, but in his final years he was imprisoned for his younger brother Shiting's crime of lèse majesté, and died shortly after being released the following year. He was active during the Kangxi period (1662-1722) of the Shengzu reign, and participated in the compilation of the imperially commissioned "Selected Poems of Peiwenzhai" and "Peiwen Rhymes and Verses". He studied Song poetry, especially the poetry of Su Shi, and produced the 50-volume "Annals of Chronological Poems by Master Dongpo with Supplements" (abbreviated as "Su Shi Su"). His style of poetry is characterized by a gentle taste that respects the beauty of nature, and he is considered a representative of the school that respects Song poetry. He has 50 volumes of "Collection of Poems of Jingye Hall" and 6 volumes of sequels.
