Sashima [town] - Sashima
A former town in Sarushima District, southwest of Ibaraki Prefecture. Long known as the producer of Sarushima tea, this agricultural region is thriving with rice and field farming. Since the construction of the Sakai Ohashi and Mebuki Ohashi bridges over the Tone River, it has developed as a supplier of vegetables to Tokyo. In March 2005, it merged with Iwai City to become Bando City. 32.46 km2 . Population: 15,023 (2003).

茨城県南西部，猿島郡の旧町。古くから猿島茶の産地として知られる農業地域で，稲作，畑作が盛ん。利根川に境大橋・芽吹(めふき)大橋が架橋されて以後，東京向け野菜供給地として発展。2005年３月岩井市と合併し市制，坂東市となる。32.46km2。１万5023人（2003）。
