Japanese: 差控 - さしひかえる

A punishment imposed on samurai and nobles during the Edo period. They were confined to their homes and away from their duties. The gates were closed, but they could enter and exit discreetly through a hidden gate. It was used as a relatively light punishment or disciplinary measure to reprimand someone for a mistake in their job, or to hold a relative or vassal responsible for a crime. It was also used voluntarily, and when a certain number of relatives or vassals were punished, depending on the type of punishment, they would submit a petition for suspension to their superior and wait patiently for instructions.

江戸時代，武士や公家に科せられた制裁。勤仕より離れ，自家に引きこもって謹慎する。門を閉ざすが，潜門（くぐりもん）から目だたないように出入りはできた。比較的軽い刑罰ないし懲戒処分として，職務上の失策をとがめたり，あるいは親族･家臣の犯罪に縁坐･連坐せしめる場合などに用いた。自発的にも行われ，親族中一定範囲の者または家臣が処罰を受けると，その刑種によっては差控伺（うかがい）を上司に提出し，慎んで指示を待った。
