[history]
The Persians, along with the Medes, belonged to the Western Iranian tribes and arrived in the Iranian plateau around 1000 BCE. Their first recorded appearance was in an inscription by Assyrian king Shalmaneser III in 843 BCE, when they were in the southwest of Lake Urmia (Rezayeh), but later moved south through the Zagros Mountains and settled in the Anshan region of Elam in the first half of the 7th century BCE.
