New Zealand novelist and short story writer. Born in Hamilton, North Island, to British immigrants. Studied law at the University of Auckland and moved to the UK. He established his name with his first collection of short stories, Conversations with an Uncle and Other Stories (1936), A Man and His Wife (1940), and especially That Summer and Other Stories (1946), becoming New Zealand's first professional writer. He described the lives of the working class in typical everyday language, denounced the lies of society, and demonstrated the existence of New Zealand literature. He also wrote long novels such as Memoirs of a Day Labourer (1965), Hide and Seek (1972), the autobiographical essay Once is Enough (1973), Twelve Minutes (1975), Never Enough (1977), and Village at Sunset (1976). In 1974, he received an honorary doctorate of letters from his alma mater.
