A Ghanaian female playwright, poet, and children's author. She writes in English. After graduating from a teacher training school in Ghana, she studied in the UK, where she studied education at Homerton College, Cambridge, and linguistics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She returned to the UK in the early 1950s, married an African-American man in 1954, and began participating in various cultural activities. In 1957, she was instrumental in establishing the Ghana Writers Association, and in 1959, she launched the literary magazine Okyeame. With support from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Ghana Arts Council, she established the Ghana Drama Studio, an experimental theatre at the University of Ghana. She conducted research on African literature and theatre, led the University of Ghana's travelling theatre company Kusum Agoromba, wrote and performed many screenplays, and published short stories. In the 1960s, he produced masterpieces such as Edufa (1967) and the three-act Foriwa (1967), which dealt with the clash between African traditions and modern European life. He also developed an interest in children's literature, producing rhythmic plays such as Vulture! Vulture! (1968) and Tahinta (1968), as well as picture stories such as Playtime in Africa (1960) and The Roadmakers (1961). (→African Literature)

ガーナの女性劇作家,詩人,児童文学作家。英語で執筆。ガーナで教員養成所を出たのちイギリスに留学,ケンブリッジのホマートン・カレッジで教育学を,ロンドン大学東洋アフリカ研究所で言語学を学んだ。1950年代初めに帰国,1954年にアメリカ黒人と結婚,数々の文化活動に参加し始めた。1957年ガーナ作家協会の設立に尽力,1959年文芸誌『オキエアメ』Okyeameを創刊。ロックフェラー財団とガーナ芸術評議会から援助を受けてガーナ大学に実験劇場ガーナ・ドラマ・スタジオを設立。アフリカ文学や演劇の調査研究,ガーナ大学の移動劇団クスム・アゴロンバ Kusum Agorombaの指導,多数のシナリオの執筆や上演,短編の発表などの活動を行なった。1960年代には『エドゥファ』Edufa(1967),3幕物の『フォリワ』Foriwa(1967)など,アフリカの伝統とヨーロッパ式の現代生活との衝突を扱った代表作が上演された。そのほか児童文学にも関心をもち,『ハゲタカ! ハゲタカ!』Vulture!
