A criminal privilege in ancient Japanese law. A type of atonement. It is given to a certain range of relatives of the Emperor, the three Empresses, those who have received special treatment from the state, and those who have received the seventh rank or sixth class of the Order of Mercy or higher. If such a person commits a crime punishable by exile or less, they are permitted to substitute a bronze atonement for their actual imprisonment. However, if they commit a serious crime such as the fifth exile, or if the person who has received the atonement harms the person who provided it, they are excluded from the scope of atonement. The details are stipulated in the Yoro no Meireiritsu, but its origins can be traced back to the Tang Law. [Kobayashi Hiroshi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
