It is said to be a mixture of agarwood, clove, shellfish , burdock, sandalwood, sweet pine, and turmeric, but there are other theories. Used in summer. ※Genji (around 1001-14) Umeeda: "Just a bunch of lotus leaves. 〘名〙① はすの葉。はちすば。※万葉(8C後)一六・三八三七・左注「於レ是饌食盛レ之皆用二荷葉一」※正法眼蔵(1231‐53)行持「松実を食し、荷葉を衣とす」 〔高適‐漁父歌〕② 薫物(たきもの)の名。六種(むくさ)の薫物の一つ。蓮の花の香に似せたもの。沈香、丁字香、甲香、藿香(かっこう)、白檀香、甘松香、熟鬱金香を練り合わせたものというが、別の説もある。夏、用いる。※源氏(1001‐14頃)梅枝「ただ荷葉を一くさ合はせ給へり。さまかはり、しめやかなるかして、あはれになつかし」③ 「かようしゅん(荷葉皴)」の略。〔芥子園画伝‐一・画学浅説入〕
