...From the beginning of the 1960s, as if in sync with the success of the Cuban Revolution, which had lifted the spirits of the Latin American people, especially their intellectuals, by demonstrating the possibility of breaking away from colonial legacies, a series of masterpieces and fine works began to be published. These include Ernesto Sábato's (1911- ) Heroes and Tombs (1961), which depicts the conflict of an absurd love during the dark days of Argentina's Peron regime; Onetti's The Shipyards (1961), from Uruguay, which explores the meaninglessness of life in a factory that is practically in ruins; Carpentier's Century of Light (1962), from Cuba, which traces the influence of the French Revolution on the Caribbean region; Fuentes' The Death of Artemio Cruz (1962), which traces the consciousness of a man who rose to success in the Mexican Revolution on his deathbed; Hopscotch (1963), by Argentine Cortázar, which brings to light the life of a rootless person in an experimental style; and Vargas Llosa's The Green House (1966), which captures the social reality of Peru in the form of a comprehensive novel. And then there is One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) by Colombian writer Garcia Marquez, which depicts the history of the New World through the founding and destruction of the fictional town of Macondo.
