At that time, there were more than 20 emirates, large and small, in the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula east of Aden. Between 1882 and 1914, these emirates signed a protectorate treaty with Britain and were placed under the Governor of Aden, forming the so-called Aden Protectorate. After World War II, amid a storm of nationalism in various places, the National Liberation Front (NLF) took the lead in the Aden Protectorate as it continued its armed struggle against Britain. In 1959, six emirates united to form the Federation of South Arabian Emirates, and in 1962, five emirates in the east were added to form the Federation of South Arabia, and in 1963, Aden joined, forming the foundation of South Yemen. *Some of the terminology that mentions "NLF" is listed below.
