Thin hair-like projections that grow from the dermal cells of insect skin are called setas or stingers. Although they are usually hollow, the hairs (venomous stingers) of the larvae of the tussock moth and the scaly moth are filled with venom, and if they pierce human skin, they easily break and the venom leaks out, causing redness, swelling, and intense pain.
