The family originated from Nishina-sho, Azumi County, Shinano Province. According to the "Nishina Iwaki Genealogy," they were descendants of Kanmu Heishi and Kanetada, the son of Sadamori, the grandson of Takamochi no Oji (according to the "Sonpi Bunmyaku," Kanetada was Sadamori's nephew). Seven generations later, Morito became a warrior on the northern side of Emperor Gotoba and was killed in battle during the Jokyu War. There are scattered instances of Nishina warriors active on the side of the Southern Court during the Nanboku-cho period in the "Taiheiki." In Tenbun 12 (1543), Morimasa defected to the Takeda clan and was killed in battle at Kawanakajima in Eiroku 4 (61).
