Tancheon

A town (eup) in Dancheon County in the northeastern part of South Hamgyong Province, North Korea. The county seat. It is located on the east coast of North Korea (the Japan Sea side) on the left bank of the Namdaecheon River. The Namdaecheon River, the Bukdaecheon River, and the Bukdaecheon River flow through fertile land, making it the agricultural center of the Japan Sea coastal area. There is a state-run agricultural machinery workshop and farm and ranch. There are also local industrial corporations that produce building materials, food, and daily necessities. The hinterland of Dancheon is a production area for copper, iron, and magnesite, and is home to the Tancheon Magnesite Factory. There is also a fishing port as a base for the fishing of pollock (Alaska pollock) and herring in the nearby waters.

北朝鮮、咸鏡(かんきょう)南道北東部の端川郡にある邑(ゆう)（町）。郡の所在地。北朝鮮の東海岸（日本海側）に位置し、南大川(なんたいせん)の左岸にある。南大川、福大川、北大川の流れる地味肥沃(ひよく)な地で、日本海沿岸地帯の農業中心地。国営農機械作業所・農牧場がある。また建材、食料品、日用品の地方工業企業体がある。端川の後背地は銅、鉄、マグネサイトの産地で端川マグネサイト工場がある。近海の明太(メンタイ)（スケトウダラ）、ニシンの漁業根拠地として漁港もある。
