The Maxillaria genus of the Orchidaceae family is an evergreen greenhouse orchid. It is an epiphytic orchid that is distributed in tropical America from Florida to Brazil and Argentina, and there are about 250 species. The stem (bulb) is slightly rounded, with one or two leathery, hard leaves at the top, and a single flower on a short flower stalk that grows from the base of the bulb. In Japan, it blooms from spring to early summer. The flower color is pale yellow or dark brown. The flower diameter is 3 to 5 cm. Maxillaria tenuifolia Lindl. and Maxillaria porphyrostele Reichb.f. are cultivated in Japan, and the original species has also been introduced.

ラン科マキシラリア属Maxillariaは常緑の温室性洋ランである。着生ランで，フロリダからブラジル，アルゼンチンにかけての熱帯アメリカに分布し，約250種がある。茎(バルブ)はやや丸型で，その頂部に革質の固い葉を1～2枚つけ，バルブの基部から出る短い花茎に1個の花を頂生する。日本では春から初夏にかけて開花する。花色は淡黄や濃茶色。花径は3～5cm。マキシラリア･テヌイフォリアM.tenuifolia Lindl.やマキシラリア･ポルフィロステレM.porphyrostele Reichb.f.などが日本で栽培され，また原種も導入されている。
