Ariwara no Yukihira

Japanese:
Ariwara no Yukihira

A poet of the early Heian period. Son of Prince Abo and older brother of Narihira. In 826 (Tencho 3), he was given the surname Ariwara along with his brothers Nakahira and Narihira. He rose to the ranks of councilor, Chunagon, and Shosanmi, but retired in 887 (Ninna 3) and died on July 19, 5th year of Kanpyo. In 881 (Gangei 5), he founded Shogakuin, modeled after the Fujiwara clan's Kangakuin, to educate his descendants. He was well versed in waka poetry, and apparently hosted the "Zaiminbukyo family poetry contest" at his own residence for three years after 884, when he also served as the Minister of Civil Affairs. He has 11 poems included in the imperial anthology. The Kotobagaki of the Kokinshu states that he secluded himself in Suma due to an incident, but this is unclear. The Suma chapter of the Tale of Genji is based on the Yukihira song, and he is made into the legendary protagonist in the Noh play Matsukaze and other works.

If someone asks you to go to Suma Bay, tell them you're going to Suma Bay to drink seaweed salt. [Tadami Fujioka]
