Ariwara clan - Ariwara clan

A descendant of Emperor Heizei. There are two branches: Prince Takaoka's line and Prince Abo's line. Prince Takaoka's sons, who were deposed as crown prince in the Kusuko Incident (810), were given the surname Ariwara no Ason, and in 826 (Tencho 3), at Prince Abo's request, the couple were given the Ariwara clan name. Prince Abo's son, Ariwara no Yukihira, rose to the rank of Shosanmi Chunagon, and his younger brother, Narihira, was named Zaigo Chujo and is famous as the protagonist of the Tales of Ise. It was Narihira's descendants who prospered in later generations. The "Ariwara clan genealogy" is known and is included in the "Zoku Gunsho Ruiju."

平城天皇(へいぜいてんのう)の皇胤(こういん)。高岳親王(たかおかしんのう)の系統と阿保親王(あぼしんのう)の系統との2流に分かれる。薬子(くすこ)の変（810）で皇太子を廃された高岳親王の子らに在原朝臣(あそん)を賜姓したのち、826年（天長3）阿保親王の要請により、その男女に在原氏を賜った。阿保親王の子在原行平(ゆきひら)は正三位(しょうさんみ)中納言(ちゅうなごん)に至り、その弟業平(なりひら)は在五中将(ざいごちゅうじょう)を称され、『伊勢物語(いせものがたり)』の主人公として著名である。後世栄えるのは業平の子孫である。「在原氏系図」が知られ、『続群書類従』にとられている。
